Tariq Rana

Dr Tariq Rana is currently working as Assistant Director, Groundwater Management in the Policy & Planning division at the Murray Darling Basin Authority. The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent expertise based Australian government agency responsible for the planning and management of both surface water and groundwater across the Murray–Darling Basin. Dr Rana is an active member of the groundwater team that undertakes activities to support the sustainable and integrated management of the water resources of the Murray-Darling Basin in a way that best meets the social, economic and environmental needs of the Basin and its communities.
He earned his PhD in the area of Hydrology from Charles Sturt University Australia. He has worked in Australia, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Pakistan in various capacities as senior lecturer, groundwater hydrologist, research associate, and water resources expert before joining Australian Public Service in 2009. He has more than 22 years’ experience including senior management roles in developing strategic research directions and bringing quality to science through a performance based rewards systems. Tariq's previous employers include the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) Australia, City University of Hong Kong, United Nations (UN) Thailand and International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Pakistan. He was also serving as Australian coordinator of UNESCO’s Hydrology for Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) Program and currently is a member of UNESCO’s IHP Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Dr Rana is also a recognised expert in area of water science and has widely published and presented internationally. He has authored/co-authored over authored 85 publications including 26 refereed journal papers, 29 technical and consultancy reports and 30 externally refereed conference papers.
